Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY): Objectives and Functions

PMKSY stands for Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana. Launched on 1st July 2015 with the motto “Har Khet Ko Paani,” PMKSY aims to expand cultivated areas in India through assured irrigation, improved water use efficiency, and reduced water wastage. The initiative also focuses on harnessing rainwater for better irrigation.

Objectives of PMKSY

The primary objectives of PMKSY are:

  1. To enhance the accessibility of water in farm fields.
  2. To expand the cultivable area with assured irrigation.
  3. To improve water usage efficiency.
  4. To ensure the integrated development of rainfed areas using a watershed approach for soil conservation.
  5. To adopt more water-saving technologies.

Functions of PMKSY

The functionalities of PMKSY include:

  1. Improving water use efficiency with the principle of ‘More crop per drop.’
  2. Creating a holistic ecosystem to conserve water.
  3. Enabling states to formulate District Irrigation Plans (DIP) and State Irrigation Plans (SIP).

Components of PMKSY

The components of PMKSY are:

  1. Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP)
  2. Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP)
  3. Per Drop More Crop (PDMC)
  4. Watershed Development (WD)

Final Word

PMKSY, or Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, also aims to attract investments in irrigation systems at the farm level, promote sustainable water use, create employment opportunities in rural areas, and ultimately contribute to doubling farmers’ income.
